Description

The Oluce Mini Coupé 2201 is a compact table lamp born from one of Italian design’s most enduring originals. Joe Colombo’s Coupé, created in 1967, went on to enter the permanent collection of MoMA New York and win the 1968 International Design Award from the American Institute of Interior Designers in Chicago. The 2201 distils that same graphic confidence into a 34 cm form, brought to market in a tightly curated set of four contemporary colours that the original never wore.

Design Heritage

Colombo conceived the original Coupé as a variation on Oluce’s existing Spider lamp, keeping its base and stem while introducing the adjustable shade cover that gave the design its name and its character. The approach, bold simplicity across three elements, base, stem and shade, proved so resolved that it has needed no fundamental revision across six decades. The Mini Coupé carries that logic forward without diluting it: a reduced footprint, the same essential architecture.

Construction

The base and semi-cylindrical shade are formed in lacquered metal and aluminium respectively, finished in the same colour throughout. The stem is chromium-plated, providing a deliberate tonal contrast against the lacquered elements. At 34 cm tall with a 15 cm base and shade diameter, the 2201 is proportioned for a bedside table or desk rather than as a room anchor. It delivers direct light, with the shade adjustable both in height along the stem and in rotational angle, allowing the beam to be directed precisely.

The Adjustable Shade Mechanism

The pivoting joint connecting the shade to the stem is the functional core of the Coupé family. On the Mini Coupé it operates on two axes: the shade slides up and down the chrome rod to alter light height, and rotates to redirect the beam. The mechanism is simple enough to adjust with one hand and holds its position without stiffness or drift. For close reading or focused desk work, the directional control is immediate and precise.
