New Product designed by Ronan Bouroullec
Two Japanese keywords offer a way to understand the new chair designed by Ronan Bouroullec for KOYORI: Ichirin, the story behind its name, and Hitoe, a word that emerged during our conversations with Ronan as we explored his idea of “monochrome.”
Ronan Bouroullec’s collaboration with KOYORI has developed through a series of chairs, including Kawara, Musubi, and Shaku, each exploring different constructions and expressions. With Ichirin, the focus turns toward reduction — an attempt to design a chair at its most essential, where simplicity becomes both the starting point and the challenge.
The name Ichirin is derived from a traditional Japanese unit of measurement — approximately 0.3 mm — reflecting the project’s focus on millimetric precision. Every dimension was carefully considered, as even the slightest adjustment could affect the balance, comfort, and overall presence of the chair.
This idea of monochrome speaks to a form reduced to its essence — simple, yet full of depth, comfort, and presence. It resonates with Hitoe: a single layer, simple yet complete.
