Almost twenty years after the original Oblong System appeared, Jasper Morrison revised its architectural structure to make it more flexible and more ergonomic. Oblong Plus is the result, a modular seating system built to fit any space, contract or residential. This three piece composition draws on elements offered in different depths and widths, each carrying the extremely comfortable padding that defines the range.

Design Inspiration & Philosophy

Morrison built his reputation on furniture that refuses to perform, and the nature of this revision is telling. Rather than restyle a successful sofa, he went back into the architecture underneath it, adjusting the structure so the geometry holds while the body is better supported. Cappellini calls the result the emblem of free and dislocated seats. The phrase captures the intent, which is seating placed where a room needs it rather than where convention puts it.

The Three Piece Composition

Three elements give a room enough seating for a family without committing the floor to a single mass. Set in a line the composition reads as one long sofa. Broken apart it becomes a sofa and a separate seat, or two facing groups across a low table. Because each module is resolved on every side, none of these arrangements leaves an unfinished back on show.
