Description
The Lasvit Spacey Table Lamp in Lunar Lithyalin is a hand-blown glass object as much as it is a light source. Designed by Lukáš Novák, who grew up in the glassmaking town of Nový Bor and blew his first glass bubble at the age of four, it arrives from the same Northern Bohemian region where the lithyalin technique was invented more than two centuries ago. The result is a lamp that carries genuine craft lineage in every swirl of its marbled surface.
Designer & Concept
Novák has described the sphere as the most perfect shape in the universe, and Spacey is his attempt to hold something of that immeasurable scale within a domestic object. He chose lithyalin specifically for its capacity to suggest depth and geological age, surfaces that look hewn from gemstone yet are the result of molten glass and human hands. “I tried to resist glass for a very long time,” he has said, “but in the end I fell in love with it.” The Spacey collection is where that love becomes most visible.
The Lithyalin Technique
Lithyalin is a 19th-century Bohemian glass method that produces a marbled surface interwoven with veins of contrasting tone, the visual effect of a polished semi-precious stone. The technique was largely forgotten until Novák revived it in Nový Bor, the very town where it originated. Each piece is hand-blown, which means no two are identical. Lasvit acknowledges this directly: natural bubbles and tonal variation are inherent to the process, not imperfections. They are the evidence of the hand.
Form & Construction
The table lamp is composed of two glass elements: a lithyalin dome base that carries the full visual weight of the piece, and a spherical diffuser above it that seats into a small stainless steel collar. The upper sphere softens and distributes the LED source into warm ambient light, while the dome below reads primarily as a sculptural form. At 20 cm in diameter and 29 cm tall, the proportions are compact enough for a bedside table or side surface without the object receding into the background.
Lasvit & Nový Bor
Lasvit was founded in 2007 by Leon Jakimič in Nový Bor, a town whose identity has been shaped by glassmaking for generations. The company name combines the Czech words for love and light. That Novák, himself a Nový Bor native, chose to revive lithyalin in the same town where it originated makes the collaboration feel less like a brand exercise and more like a natural extension of a shared place and tradition.
