Design Concept
Baxter describes Afra as a piece that celebrates the meeting of organic solidity and upholstered softness. The ash frame is not concealed within the upholstery but expressed through it, with its grain visible in the natural finish and its curves shaping the outer silhouette of the chair. The result is a dialogue between two materials that perform opposite roles yet arrive at the same visual conclusion: a composed, contemplative object.
Ash Frame
The frame is formed in ash, a hardwood with a pronounced, directional grain that reads clearly in the natural finish. For interiors calling for deeper tones, the wenge stain transforms the same timber into a dark, close-grained surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. Both finishes preserve the wood’s structural role in the visual composition of the chair: visible, expressive and load-bearing in equal measure.
Leather Upholstery
Afra is entirely wrapped in Baxter leather, covering the padded backrest and seat. The armrest flows naturally from the frame into the upholstered surface, creating a continuous line that runs the full profile of the chair without interruption.
