Description

Crown is a contemporary design icon that recalls the old candle chandelier without imitating it. Jehs+Laub took the shape of a snowflake as their starting point and built a modular structure whose branches radiate from a central stem. The Major carries 30 glass diffusers across a span of roughly 113 cm, and the modular logic behind it opens up countless combinations of finish and size.

Design Inspiration & Philosophy

A traditional chandelier hangs its candles from arms that curve upward. Jehs+Laub keep the radial geometry and strip away the ornament, leaving a structure of thin tubes and small glass caps arranged with the irregular symmetry of a snowflake. The reference is legible from across a room while the object itself stays unmistakably modern, which is why it settles equally well into a stucco ceilinged apartment and a plain new build.

The Modular Structure

The frame is assembled from die cast metal components that repeat, which is what makes the family possible. Crown Minor holds 12 diffusers, Major holds 30 and Magnum holds 42, all built from the same vocabulary. Choosing between them is a question of ceiling height and room volume rather than a change of design, so a large space and a small one can be lit by the same object at two scales.

Light Quality

Each of the 30 sources is capped with a sandblasted glass diffuser, so the fixture reads as many small points of soft light rather than one bright mass. Output is diffused and dimmable depending on the bulb specified, which lets a dining room move from bright to intimate over the course of an evening. A ribbed transparent diffuser is available where a harder sparkle is wanted.

Finishes

Six finishes change the piece considerably. Matt white recedes into a pale ceiling. Matt black draws the structure as a graphic line. Polished metal and the plated gold and black options introduce reflection, so the frame picks up the light it is producing. The supplied cable is 3 m long, which suits high ceilings and stairwells.
